Preventive dentistry is the practice of keeping your teeth healthy and caring for them with regularity. It is extremely important and helps avoid issues like cavities, enamel wear, gum diseases and more. There are a number of different forms of preventive dentistry like regular dental checkups and cleanings.

Visiting your dentist at least two times each year is crucial for maintaining optimal oral health. Children should be taught how to maintain oral hygiene from a young age, this ensures that their teeth remain strong, white & clean from the outset.

While we at Lincoln Park Smiles provide excellent preventive dentistry services, we urge all our patients to focus on their own dental care in their home. Here is a list of things you can do that will keep your teeth healthy and free from cavities:

  1. Brush Your Teeth Daily

Brushing your teeth daily with fluoride toothpaste is probably the most important part of preventive dentistry. The bristles of your toothbrush start to fray over time, which is why you should change it at least 3 to 4 times a year. Brushing your tongue is also important. It removes the bacteria present in your mouth and also keeps your breath fresh.

  1. Floss Daily

Flossing your teeth every day is also very important. Toothbrushes aren’t effective in cleaning the tight spaces between your teeth. However, flossing can easily clean out these spaces. For people that have braces, floss threads can easily get caught between the metal brackets.

Flossing the right way is crucial, as you can cause severe damage to your gums if done incorrectly. You can always ask your dentist to perform a small flossing demonstration to help you get a clear idea of how it’s supposed to be done.

  1. Visit Your Dentist

As mentioned earlier, visiting your dentist at least  twice a year to check out if you have any problems is important. Frequent visits can also be done if you feel that you’re at high risk of any dental problems. Exams and cleanings allow the dentist to identify any problems and fix them right away.

Importance Of Preventive Dentistry

You can reduce the risk of developing cavities, gingivitis, periodontitis or any other dental problems by maintaining good oral hygiene. This also reduces the risk of secondary problems that can be caused by poor oral hygiene. Here are some health-related problems that can be linked to poor oral health:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Respiratory disease

Regular cleanings are probably the most basic and important part of maintaining oral hygiene. There is no substitute for removing disease-causing plaque or calculus (tartar) from your teeth. This is especially true in hard-to-reach areas like your gum line. This is why regular cleanings are so important for your teeth.

Practicing preventive dentistry can also save you money. Even though you might have dental insurance, the costs associated with poor oral hygiene can add up significantly. Although preventive dentistry may not eliminate your need for dental implants, root canals, or filling entirely, it will definitely reduce your need for these expensive treatments.

Your Role In Preventive Dentistry

The most important component of preventive dentistry is you. The list of procedures can only be effective if you visit the dental office and take advantage of them. Similarly, you have to maintain good oral hygiene at home too.

Brushing and flossing your teeth daily can go a long way toward removing plaque which is the primary cause for dental problems, tooth loss and the need for complex dental treatments.
