Ranked by Dental Hygienists at Lincoln Park Smiles in Chicago, Illinois

With so many toothbrushes on the market, it’s hard to know which one will best clean your teeth and prevent cavities. The American Dental Association (ADA), for example, only recommends certain toothbrushes based on the bristle quality, durability of materials, and safety of components in the mouth.

Toothbrushes that have stiff and coarse bristles can wear away your enamel and weaken your teeth. They can also cause your gums to recede, exposing the roots of your teeth and potentially harming your smile esthetics. We’ve all heard the term, “long on the tooth”. Gum recession will elongate the appearance of teeth. Choosing the right toothbrush maintains oral health and keeps your teeth safe for years to come.

Our dental hygienists, or RDH’s for short, are proud to be part of a results-oriented dental hygiene team. It’s a top priority for us to help every patient under our care at Lincoln Park Smiles achieve optimal oral health. Every RDH knows that proper home care begins with the perfect toothbrush!

Here are our top 4 choices of the best toothbrushes for oral hygiene. However, not every toothbrush will fit your needs.  The RDHs at LPS (yes that’s a lot of acronyms) tailor their recommendations specific to the nuances of your dental hygiene needs. We want everyone to get an “A” grade on their dental check-up!!!

Nimbus Brushes

Our absolute favorite and we think the best manual toothbrush on the market is the Nimbus brush. It is highly effective because the Nimbus bristles are both soft and uniquely designed to fit into crevices in between teeth and under the gumline.

Nimbus brush heads have two-level soft bristle technology. The longer bristles scrub plaque from hard-to-reach parts of the mouth while the shorter bristles provide support and an excellent clean. This technology allows the head of the toothbrush to keep its shape, unlike regular nylon bristles.

The Nimbus also comes with three head sizes: nimby, compact, and regular. We normally recommend the regular size, but the smaller sizes are fantastic for those with a sensitive gag reflex or with really small mouths. These manual brushes come at an affordable price. A 5-pack of regular-sized Nimbus brushes only costs $11.99! It’s our favorite toothbrush for its durability, economical price, and effective cleaning ability.

Sonicare FlexCare

The Philips Sonicare FlexCare toothbrush line is one of the highest-quality electric toothbrushes on the market. For those who cannot live without an electric toothbrush, we highly recommend this product.

Our RDH recommend models of the Sonicare FlexCare brush are: Plus and Platinum. Each one costs approximately $150 and comes with a handle, brush head, hygiene cap, travel case, and charger. Electric toothbrushes require replacement brush heads every 3-4 months, which is the same as a manual toothbrush.

Both the Plus and Platinum models brush at 31,000 strokes per minute and have a built-in two-minute brush timer. You only need to recharge them approximately every three weeks. They are up to seven times more effective at removing plaque than manual brushing when used correctly.

The main differences between the two Sonicare FlexCare models are the amount of offered cleaning modes and a built-in pressure sensor.

The Sonicare FlexCare+ model includes five modes of cleaning while the Platinum only has 3. Only the Platinum model includes a built-in pressure sensor to warn you if you’re brushing your teeth too hard.

We recommend the Sonicare FlexCare toothbrush for those who prefer electric toothbrushes and/or have sensitive teeth. The choices of cleaning modes make it easy to have a comfortable brushing experience.

For those who struggle with gum health, this is also a great toothbrush as it reduces gum problems and recession.

Oral-B

Oral-B offers an extensive line of electric toothbrushes, ranging in price and quality from cheap to quite expensive. Their five series of toothbrushes from lowest to the highest quality are Vitality, Pro, Smart, Genius, and iO. We believe the Genius series is the best quality for the price.

The toothbrushes in the Genius series cost between $100-$220. These brushes oscillate, rotate, and pulsate for 3D cleaning action and have up to six cleaning modes. They track your brushing to provide feedback via Bluetooth that connects to your phone.

Oral-B Genius brushes are great for deep cleaning. These toothbrushes also provide sensitive brush replacement heads instead of regular ones if you suffer from sensitive teeth.

The built-in two-minute timer allows you to easily make sure you are brushing your teeth sufficiently. We recommend the Genius toothbrush for those who want to improve their brushing habits.

The built-in timer helps you make sure that you are brushing for the right amount of time. The AI tracks whether you are fully cleaning your teeth at the correct pressure so you can improve the way you brush.

TePe Gentle Care Brush

The TePe Gentle Care toothbrush is an eco-friendly manual brush that is a great alternative to the Nimbus. These brushes have incredibly soft bristles for those with extra-sensitive teeth. This TePe brush is sustainably sourced.

Patients who have just undergone oral surgery or have sensitive oral tissue are the best candidates for the TePe Gentle Care brush. One of these brushes costs approximately $3 on the TePe website.

One of the best features of the TePe brush is that you can angle it to fit your mouth. By simply running the neck under hot water, shaping it, then running it under cold water, you can personalize your TePe brush to the shape of your mouth.

We also love the TePe Gentle Care brush because it has incredibly soft filaments. It is gentle on enamel and great for overly sensitive teeth or gums. This brush provides a painless clean so that you don’t need to dread brushing your teeth.
