IN-OFFICE TEETH WHITENING
Am I a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening products may be a suitable solution to your needs if you have tooth discoloration or stains from any of the following:
- Consumption of tea, coffee or red wine
- Using tobacco products
- Genetic factors
- Certain medications (e.g., tetracycline)
- Exposure to too much fluoride
- Tooth decay
- Tooth trauma
- The natural effects of aging
Different types of discoloration require different treatment approaches. For example, if you have minor discoloration from drinking your daily cup of coffee, you may achieve your desired results with over-the-counter gel and whitening trays. On the other hand, if your teeth are discolored from the inside out (which is usually caused by tetracycline, tooth decay, trauma or the use of antibiotics as a child), you will not benefit from OTC whitening products. Your teeth will require in-office treatment, which combines professional-grade peroxide gel and LED lights, to attain your ideal cosmetic outcome.
Teeth Whitening Treatment: What to Expect
There are two types of teeth whitening treatment: in-office and at-home.
In-office teeth whitening is a good option because Dr. Jack can control the application of a stronger bleaching agent to the teeth and protect the rest of the mouth from these materials. In addition, he can manage any concerns about tooth sensitivity. Our patients like in-office whitening because their results are noticeable almost immediately.
Before starting treatment, your teeth will be cleaned and examined for any potential problems (e.g., decay, cracks). Your gums will be covered with a shield to protect them from irritation caused by the whitening gel. The whitening gel will then be applied to your teeth and kept on for about 15 minutes. Depending on the teeth whitening system being used, a special LED light may be focused on the teeth to activate the product. The gel is removed and the process is repeated one or two more times.
Alternatively, at-home whitening treatment is more affordable and can be used at your convenience. Whitening kits typically include trays (that resemble mouth guards) and a bleaching gel. If you don’t have the time to spend on in-office teeth whitening treatment, at-home treatment may be a better option for you.
Your Bright, Beautiful Results
Teeth whitening treatment can improve the color of your teeth by up to eight shades. You’ll notice an almost-immediate boost in the brightness of your smile as you leave the office after your treatment. Occasional touch-up treatments are recommended to maintain your results.
Teeth whitening in Chicago can have a powerful effect on your life and your happiness. The confidence you’ll enjoy, knowing that your teeth look great, will make you more inclined to smile, which may open the door to personal and professional opportunities. You may decide to pursue additional cosmetic dentistry treatment to further improve the appearance of your smile. For example, if you are concerned about the spacing or alignment of your teeth, Dr. Jack can recommend treatment with Invisalign. Or, if you have minor flaws in your teeth like chips or cracks, a set of porcelain veneers will mask these imperfections.
